Maryland Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2026: Larry Ringer, PGA

Larry Ringer was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, and credits his father with introducing him to golf. After receiving his first lessons at age eleven from Head PGA Professional Dick Amidon at the Culpeper Country Club, he never looked back. A graduate of Murray State University with a degree in Business Administration in 1967, Ringer earned All-American honors and finished ninth individually when Murray State competed in the NCAA Championship that year. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs the same year, a fitting capstone to a standout collegiate career.

After working his way through the assistant ranks at several notable clubs, Ringer joined the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in 1976 and was elevated to Head PGA Professional and Golf Coach the following year, a position he held for fifteen years. He later served as Head PGA Professional at the Country Club at Woodmore before becoming PGA Director of Instruction and Head Professional/General Manager at Musket Ridge Golf Club.

One highlight of his remarkable playing career came at the 1995 U.S. Senior Open at Congressional Country Club, where Ringer lead the first round with a 68 and finished tied for 21st. On the regional stage, his MAPGA record is among the most impressive in Section history, 20 MAPGA Championships in all, including two Section Championships, the MAPGA Player of the Year in 1972 and 1978, and the Senior Player of the Year four times. He won the Maryland Open twice and the Maryland Senior Open four times. On the national stage, he made the field in three PGA Championships, competed in two U.S. Opens, and played in six USGA Senior Opens. He was presented with the MAPGA President's Award in 1995 and inducted into the Middle Atlantic PGA Hall of Fame and the Murray State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
