Maryland Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2026: Joan Winchester

Joan Winchester is one of the most accomplished female golfers in the history of Maryland. Born on January 16, 1938, and a lifelong resident of Catonsville, she has been a member of Rolling Road Golf Club since 1948, a home course where her record of dominance is unmatched. Over more than three decades, she captured 16 Rolling Road Women's Club Championships, a mark that stands as a testament to her sustained excellence.

On the state stage, Winchester built one of the most decorated competitive records in MSGA history. She won four MSGA Women's Amateur Championships in 1967, 1972, 1973, and 1975, with two additional runner-up finishes, and added two MSGA Senior Women's Championships, three Baltimore Metropolitan titles, and the 1970 MSGA Mixed Two-Ball Championship. Additionally, in 1966, Joan won the prestigious Payne championship at Congressional Country Club, and later in her career, she was a senior champion at the Greiner tournament at Caves Valley Golf Club.

 Her competitive reach extended to the national level as well, where she represented Maryland in USGA State Team matches, served as non-playing captain for Maryland's state team, and competed in USGA Senior Championships.

Following her playing career, Joan gave back to the game through dedicated service. She was an inaugural member of the Maryland State Women's Division Board in 1996, served as a USGA Regional Affairs Committee member, and served as President of the MSGA Women's Division from 2002 to 2003, as well as President of the Women's Golf Association of Baltimore from 1999 to 2000. Her impact on women's golf in Maryland, both as a fierce competitor and committed administrator, leaves an enduring legacy in the state's golfing history.
